Big Shoulders Fund is an independent charitable organization that serves inner-city Catholic schools which provide a quality, values-based education for Chicago’s children, thereby contributing to stronger communities. One hundred percent of funds currently raised support four major areas – scholarships and enrichment, operational improvements, academic programs, and leadership development – with the goal of not just strengthening schools, but whole communities, and preparing students for life-long success.
In 2018 the Big Shoulders Fund is lacing up its running shoes again and growing the Big Shoulders Fund Racing Team with a group running the Chicago Half Marathon on Sunday, September 23, 2018, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon on Sunday, October 7, 2018, and other marathons and half marathons of their choice.
These teams will be raising funds to support the Big Shoulders Fund 75 schools who are educating nearly 20,000 students – 80 percent are minorities, 65 percent live are low-income and 30 percent are not Catholic. The teams' funds, along with the $18 - $20 million Big Shoulders invests annually in the schools, will be used for scholarships, special education programs, instructional equipment, much-needed school facility improvements, faculty support, and operating grants. This will help continue the schools’ success and allow 95 percent of our students to graduate high school and 85 percent of graduating scholars enroll in college.
